Optical and ultrasonic technologies
for biomedical applications

The Industrial Materials Institute (IMI), in association with the Canadian Institute for Photonics Innovation (CIPI) organizes a two-day symposium on optical and ultrasonic technologies for biomedical applications on May 3-4, 2007.

The first day is devoted to a workshop on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). The main goal is to increase networking between research groups that develop OCT across Canada. Participants would be invited to present their current and future activities. The duration of the presentations will be adjusted to the number of participants. The day would end with a discussion covering the following topics:

  • Current and future challenges of OCT regarding hardware development and applications;
  • Promotion of interaction firstly between Canadian OCT developers and secondly between OCT developers and users.

The second day is devoted to photo-acoustic and acousto-optic techniques for biomedical diagnostic. The objective is to provide Canadian researchers involved in these fields an overview of the current developments and trends in these fields and to regroup them for discussion and networking.

This day will start with a seminar on the state-of-the-art of the technologies and applications in these fields. The seminar will be given by Professor Lihong Wang, Gene K. Beare Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering of Washington University in St. Louis. A presentation of several technologies developed at IMI with applications in opto-acoustic diagnostics such as lasers, adaptive interferometers and painted-on transducers, will follow. Selected participants will be also invited to present their work.

Post-symposium information

Dear attendees,

Thanks for coming to the Symposium. We hope that you enjoy it.

Please note that a video of the tutorial given by professor Wang on Friday morning (as well as other talks by professor Wang) can be downloaded from the following web site.
